{"id":57383,"date":"2025-12-24T07:00:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T13:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodtank.com\/?p=57383"},"modified":"2025-12-22T15:22:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T21:22:14","slug":"op-ed-fairtrade-holiday-spices-supporting-global-farming-communities-one-season-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodtank.com\/news\/2025\/12\/op-ed-fairtrade-holiday-spices-supporting-global-farming-communities-one-season-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Op-Ed | Fairtrade Holiday Spices: Supporting Global Farming Communities, One Season at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite uncertainty over tariffs and the overall economy, American shoppers are expected to spend more during the 2025 holiday shopping season, <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/cnbc-nrf-retail-monitor-s-october-data-shows-strong-momentum-going-into-holiday-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/cnbc-nrf-retail-monitor-s-october-data-shows-strong-momentum-going-into-holiday-season&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1766522250500000&amp;usg=AOvVaw35PMDKfHPmJqqDOVetSDUO\">according to the latest forecast from the National Retail Federation<\/a>, which estimates that shoppers will make an increase of 3.7 percent to 4.2 percent over the same two-month period a year ago.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, as shoppers look to find products that fit their budget, lifestyle and needs, many are also looking for items that align with their values.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Now more than ever, we\u2019re seeing shoppers turn to labels like organic, single-origin, ethically sourced and <a href=\"https:\/\/fairtrade.net\/us-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/fairtrade.net\/us-en.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1766522250500000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3vj6h_ZwQAqwHHOp51dm9Y\"><span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to trust that the items in their shopping carts are sourced with both people and planet in mind.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These informed choices show it\u2019s not just about quality ingredients for consumers: it\u2019s about transparency.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At 78 years old, spice farmer A.G. Nandasena attributes part of his good health to the \u201cpeaceful and supportive life\u201d made possible by the benefits afforded to farmers through\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He grows household spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, pepper and turmeric in his forest garden farmland in Sri Lanka, where the crops are interspersed among wild native plants to preserve biodiversity, prevent soil erosion and increase much needed shade for the wildlife that inhabits it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For more than 20 years, Nandasena has exclusively implemented organic practices through <span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0certification, which not only benefits the native plants and animal species on his land, but it also offers him the opportunity to earn higher profits for his crops, which has helped Nandasena educate his children and access housing, furniture, and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Farmers stories like Nandasena\u2019s prove what\u2019s possible when we center the needs of smallholder farmers through fairer farming practices.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And customers see this value: research conducted in 2025 by independent firm Globescan showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrade.net\/en\/for-business\/benefits-of-being-certified\/consumer-trends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.fairtrade.net\/en\/for-business\/benefits-of-being-certified\/consumer-trends.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1766522250500000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2QAv0k8fM2IIXdqL4K9G5x\">72 percent of American consumers<\/a>\u00a0who have seen the\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0Mark are willing to pay more to ensure the farmers behind their favorite products are paid a fairer price.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Yet, for decades we\u2019ve seen small-scale farmers behind the products that Americans know and love struggling to receive fair and sustainable prices for their goods and labor.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0helps ensure farmers are paid fairly for their products by identifying a minimum price, which includes meeting high standards for labor practices and environmental and human safety. This price protects farmers when global market rates drop to help ensure that they\u2019re able to maintain responsible practices.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In addition,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0Premiums are added to the price of the commodity. These funds go directly to a network of producers, who democratically decide how to use that money to support their community.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, not every product has a fixed\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0minimum price and premium yet; spices are a prime example. In some cases, the\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0Premium varies not just by crop, but by country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To address this, Frontier Co-op and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0America partnered on a pilot program to establish\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0pricing for three key spices grown by our partners in Guatemala: organic cardamom, turmeric, and allspice. This is important because spice prices fluctuate often between extreme highs and lows, and unlike other commodities, pricing is not publicly available. Lack of transparent pricing puts farmers at a disadvantage. The initiative is designed to improve farmers\u2019 stability and resilience in the face of socioeconomic and climate-related challenges outside of their control.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If successful, this program can be scaled to prove a more stable global market demand for their\u00a0<span class=\"il\">fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0products, expand the availability of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span> spices in the United States for consumers, and change the way we understand\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0premiums.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As global markets grow even more unpredictable due to geopolitical issues, shifting weather patterns, and increasing climate-related natural disasters, it\u2019s clear that small-scale farmers are facing monumental challenges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s why\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0is such a vital linchpin in ensuring farmers are paid a fair price for their goods and sets a high standard that prohibits child labor, protects workers\u2019 rights, and promotes sustainable farming practices that improve the environment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In November 2025,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0Month,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0America commissioned local murals across the country to depict\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0farmers, including Nandasena, to share their stories and entice shoppers to learn more about products that are sustainably sourced and work to increase fairness and equity in our global food supply chain.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When shoppers understand what that label represents\u2014fairer pay, safe working conditions, and community investment\u2014it becomes much more tangible how their purchasing decisions directly impact farmer livelihoods. By choosing products with the <span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>\u00a0Mark, we can ensure smallholder farmers earn a fairer price for their goods and help strengthen their communities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As consumers, brands, and cooperatives standing with and supporting\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Fairtrade<\/span>, we can move beyond a profit-over-people model to build a food system that works for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><i>Articles like the one you just read are made possible through the generosity of Food Tank members.
